How to protect your moped/motorcycle

We’ve received increased reports of motorcycle/moped thefts in your area. Thieves often target these vehicles because they can be seen as “easy pickings.” Here are a few tips on how to keep yours safe:

  • Buy a good lock- as a rule buy the best one that you can afford. Look out for Police Approved “sold secure” gold standard products.
  • Thread the lock through the frame and attach to an immovable object. Some thieves will steal individual parts, so this makes it more difficult. Apply the steering lock and fit a D lock on the front wheel. This will stop it being wheeled off.
  • Fit a waterproof cover when left unattended- criminals are often on the lookout for specific makes and models; fitting a cover will disguise the bike.
  • Remove ignition keys even if you are nearby.
  • Buy a quality fitted alarm. Thatcham rated 1 or 2 alarm systems are recommended. They include tracking, immobilisation, anti-grab and movement sensors.
  • Mark your property- marking your property makes it difficult for thieves to sell on. It also makes it easier for us to identify your property when we recover it.
  • Preferably leave your vehicle overnight in a locked shed or garage, fitted with alarms. If that is not possible, park it in the safest place available.
  •

Please inform the police if your vehicle is stolen. Your vehicle’s details will be added onto our police system and will flag as stolen once a check is made. Criminals often use stolen mopeds/motorcycles to commit other crime like drug dealing or theft.

Basingstoke Police have returned a number of stolen mopeds recently though we still advise you to be vigilant.
