As we approach bonfire night and people make preparations, we are highlighting some important information in relation to fireworks and the impact it can have on animals and livestock. 

Hampshire is a county made up of vast rural areas, and places like the New Forest also have free-roaming animals.

Everyone should be able to enjoy fireworks safely, whether at an organised display or in their back garden. 

It is important, however, that you know the law and understand the risks and consequences that could occur if fireworks are not used safely – including the distress it can cause to animals and the that police can take action if a criminal offence is identified.

We have previously had issues in the New Forest with fireworks being set off in close proximity to ponies, causing the animals to panic and on one occasion a horse ran into a barbed wire fence. On this particular occasion, the organiser of the display was dealt with by police for an offence under Section 4 of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. 

The legislation identifies an offence if a person’s act, or failure to act, causes unnecessary suffering to an animal. You can read more about the legislation here: https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/45/section/4

As above, everyone should be able to enjoy fireworks safely, but please be aware of your surroundings and the impact this could have, particularly on livestock. You could find yourself breaking the law if your actions are careless.
