Crimestoppers: help put the brakes on drink and drug driving

Alcohol and drug drivers put other people’s lives at risk. In 2023 Crimestoppers received over 45,000 reports about people regularly driving while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs.

It could be a work colleague, a neighbour, or even a family member or a friend. This can explain why some people are reluctant to go to the police, because of the fear of being identified.

You can give information 100% anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online.

Remember – in an emergency, always call 999.

Selling your car? Be aware of this scam

Motorists are being warned of a scam that sees potential buyers trying to knock money off the asking price by tampering with the vehicle.

This scam usually involves two or more fraudsters turning up to view a car for sale.  While one distracts the owner, their accomplice tampers with the engine or exhaust by pouring oil into the coolant reservoir, exhaust or over the engine to make sure the car “breaks down” when it is test driven.

The scammer will then attempt to negotiate a lower price claiming the engine is damaged.

Top tips:

  • Consider your location, can you meet somewhere with CCTV?
  • Have a trusted family member or friend with you during the viewing
  • Don’t let buyers distract you or split up during car inspections
  • Never let anyone drive or inspect your car unsupervised
  • If smoke appears during a test drive have the car professionally inspected.
