Don't let them pocket it - crime prevention advice around pickpocketing this festive season

Hello everyone,

We hope you’re all having a cheerful and safe Christmas period so far, and have been enjoying all the festivities across Southampton. We know that many of you will be out doing your Christmas shopping or visiting the Christmas markets.

Sadly, there are some criminals who see this as an opportunity to steal.

We want to make sure that we tackle any crime of this nature in our city as soon as possible, so we are encouraging you to report any incidents or suspicious activity, but we also think it’s important to give you the heads up so that you can be vigilant.

We have a few simple tips below for when you are out shopping or in busy areas this Christmas:

  • Pay attention and be aware of your whereabouts  using your phone or listening to music can be distracting.
  • Make sure your bag is fully closed and as secure as possible so that a pickpocket would find it difficult to get into without you knowing.
  • Avoid putting valuables, such as a wallet, purse or phone, into your back pocket.
  • Never leave a bag unattended in a trolley, even if for a couple of seconds.
  • Try to keep wallets in an inside pocket and out of sight from a potential pickpocket.
  • Keep your PIN number confidential.
  • When entering your PIN number at a terminal ensure no one can see you enter it.
  • Try to pay for items on a debit card rather than carrying large amounts of cash. If this is not possible keep cash to a minimum.
  • Before you leave your car, ensure all windows and doors are closed and locked.
  • Avoid leaving your purchases and presents in your vehicle. If you must make sure they are not on display, store in the boot, and make sure the car is locked.
  •

If you’ve been a victim of a pickpocketing theft, please do report it by calling police on 101 or by making a report via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website.

Always call 999 in an emergency.
