West Wight Neighbourhood Newsletter – February 2025

Good afternoon all,

The latest edition of the West Wight Neighbourhood Newsletter is here, giving you a snapshot of some of the things that the team have been up to throughout January

Newport

Operation Suppress is the name given to our efforts on the Island to tackle retail crime, mainly shoplifting, and to support businesses affected by crime and anti-social behaviour. Newport NPT have been working with other Island police teams to target shoplifters, and recently conducted a proactive operation in the town with a mix of uniform and plain clothes officers. During this op, officers also identified and arrested individuals driving under the influence of drugs in the town, and also conducted stop searches on people which resulted in cannabis being seized from two individuals.

The team also arrested and charged an individual with 4 shoplifting offences, after allegedly stealing more than £500 worth of goods from B&M.

Wight Rural South

The Wight Rural South, who are based in Yarmouth police office, hosted another cycle marking day in Freshwater. This was very well attended, with more than 24 bikes security marked.

We have plans to arrange more events in the West Wight, and these will be advertised via Facebook and Hampshire & IOW Alerts.

The rural monthly beat surgeries will continue and contact with parish councils is ongoing.

The team have also been working with local Housing Associations to address the behaviours of some individuals who have been coming to police attention. Several Community Protection Notice Warnings (CPNW) and Community Protection Notices (CPN) have been issued.

These are written warnings issued to modify negative behaviours, ongoing problems and nuisance behaviours. This begins with a CPNW which is a warning letter from the police about their behaviour. If the behaviour continues, police can look to serve a CPN, which requires the individual to follow certain rules. If the CPN is breached, then the individual can be prosecuted and face a fine or imprisonment.

Cowes

Officers recently spent a day at the Red Jet terminal in Cowes where a man was arrested and a large quantity of cannabis found after a subsequent premises search.

For those wanting to speak with the team in Cowes, why not pop in to one of our sessions at the station on the High Street? Our February opening times for meeting the public are below:
