Appeal for witnesses to Basingstoke theft and assault

Police investigating the assault of a woman and a theft in Basingstoke town centre are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

At around 6.30pm yesterday evening (Saturday 29 March) a woman in her 30s was approached by a man unknown to her outside of the Londis store on Alencon Link, opposite Basingstoke train station.

The man became agitated and followed the woman in the direction of Sainsbury's and onto Lower Church Street. When they were close to the roundabout at Alencon Link he pushed her to the floor, causing minor injuries, and attempted to take her bag. He also caused damage to her phone.

Officers attended and have arrested a 35-year-old man from Basingstoke on suspicion of assault, theft and robbery. He remains in police custody at the current time.

We believe there were a number of people in the area at the time who saw what happened and have not yet spoken to police.

Were you in the Alencon Link, The Malls, or Lower Church Street area yesterday evening at around 6.30pm? Did you see the assault take place? Perhaps you were driving through the area and have dash cam footage which may have captured the incident?

Anyone who saw what happened is asked to make contact with police by calling 101 and quoting the reference number 44250137398.

Alternatively, you can submit information online via https://www.hampshire.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/
