Man, 42, arrested in connection with Newport assault

Following our earlier witness appeal, we can now update you that a 42-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

He remains in police custody at this time.

The arrest follows a report of a serious assault on a man on Cross Street, Newport at around midday on Friday 4 April.

The victim – a man in his 80s – suffered injuries to the face, elbow and hand and was briefly left unconscious as a result of the incident.

As part of our ongoing investigation, we would like to still hear from anyone who witnessed anything of the incident, or anyone who was in the area of Cross Lane, School Lane and Staplers Road around the time of the assault.

Do you have any footage which may assist us, including any dash cam, mobile phone, doorbell camera, or any other CCTV?

If you can help, please call 101 and quote incident number 44250148639.

You can also report online via the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary website, below, or via Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
