New Milton man, 35, sentenced for the importation of Class B drugs

A 35-year-old man from New Milton has been sentenced after pleading guilty to the importation of a Class B drug.

Thomas Michael Prior, of Pennywell Gardens, appeared at Southampton Crown Court on Friday (11 April).

As well as the importation offence, he was also sentenced for possession with intent to supply a Class B drug.

Prior received 23 months’ imprisonment, suspended for two years, and was also ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work within the community.

It follows an incident in October 2022 when 4.7kg of herbal cannabis, due to be delivered to Prior’s home address, was intercepted at East Midlands Airport.

Leading the investigation into the offences was PC Chris Evans, of New Milton Neighbourhood Policing Team.

He said: “I’m pleased to see that Prior has been held accountable for his actions.

“He attempted to important an illegal substance into this country, with the intention of subsequently supplying it on to others.

“While the original offences themselves were more than two years ago, we remained determined to ensure Prior faced justice, and this has now happened.”

On the sentence handed down and the message to those thinking of doing likewise, PC Evans, said: “If Prior chooses to commit further offences during the suspended period, he will immediately be placed behind bars to serve the remainder of his sentence.

"The judge in this case told Prior that he narrowly missed a custodial sentence, and I’m hopeful that this, as well as the sentence already handed to him, will prevent him from making the same poor decisions again.

“This outcome should also serve as a reminder to others who are thinking of doing similar. You will not get away with it and we will work tirelessly in our efforts to bring you before the courts and ensure you face prosecution.”
