I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Nuisance Vehicle use, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Op Tranquility Update...
On Monday night (24 November), Roads Policing Unit officers again completed patrols across the Hedge End, West End, Botley and Netley, areas, concentrating their efforts on locations in which vehicle-related antisocial behaviour (ASB) has recently been reported.
Their evening was extremely busy and productive, as the below hopefully demonstrates…
• A vehicle, known to be involved in crime, was identified and stopped. Checks were subsequently carried out on the driver. While no offences were uncovered on this occasion, further intelligence has been submitted as a result of the stop.
• Two other vehicles, believed to be involved in vehicle-related ASB, were also stopped and checked. These were both all in order.
• Meanwhile, several tickets were handed out for issues relating to obstructed view, exhaust and driving without due care.
• On Tollbar Way, another vehicle was stopped, with a ticket issued for an exposed cord on the tyre, subsequently prohibited for being in a dangerous condition.
• A 21-year-old man from Southampton was arrested on Grange Road suspicion of driving a motor vehicle with a proportion of a specified controlled drug above the specified limit. He has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
• A 48-year-old man from Southampton was arrested at Sainsbury's on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle when alcohol level above limit. He has been released under investigation, pending further enquiries.
• Another stop, this time under s.23 Misuse of Drugs Act, resulted in a community resolution being issued for possession of a Class B drug – cannabis.
• Finally, four people were caught speeding (three car drivers and one motorcyclist), another was dealt with for a lighting offence and six others provided negative breath tests for impairment.
*Operation Tranquility is our campaign aimed at tackling vehicle-related anti-social behaviour in our area. It follows reports of vehicle-related anti-social behaviour and is targeting those intent on causing disruption within our communities, something which we will not tolerate and will relentlessly work to combat.
Tackling antisocial behaviour can be a complex issue, and one which requires input and action from more than just the police. February 2025 saw the publication of the Ministry of Justice Crime and Policing Bill: Antisocial behaviour (ASB) factsheet. This outlined a number of new measures including making powers to seize vehicles under section 59 of the Police Reform Act 2002 easier to use, allowing the police to react robustly and immediately to the anti-social use of motor vehicles. If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at www.hampshire.police.uk, or call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
